The Scottish Teachers Association of Religious and Moral Education (STARME) was officially formed in 2022. Following wide consultation across various educational forums, a small group of passionate teachers identified a real hunger for a new, dedicated association. With pre-existing bodies becoming inactive, there was a distinct lack of representation for the voice of RME teachers at both local and national levels.
Knowing the success of other subject associations, we sought to bring about the structures and opportunities needed to truly meet our core mission: inspiring and empowering excellence in RME. Today, we have a strong and growing membership representing Secondary schools, the private sector, academic researchers, and Primary colleagues across Scotland.

Our Aims
Our Associated Subjects
Due to the wide range of subjects taught within our curriculum areas, STARME explicitly supports the teaching of:
- Religious and Moral Education (RME)
- Religious Education in Roman Catholic schools (RERC)
- Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies (RMPS)
- Philosophy
Please Note: The purposes of the Association strictly relate to the teaching of the subject areas noted above, and not to Religious Observance (Time for Reflection).
